Debug tool: How to read and use

The easiest way to troubleshoot your survey is to use the debug tool. To activate the tool, go to your website and then add /?extellio_debug=true at the end of the URL. A modal will now pop up at the bottom of the page.

If the modal doesn't pop up, it's usually because the page or website is missing the Extellio script, or because your CSP prevents the debug modal. Read more about CSP here.

Modal information

The debug modal looks like this:

Survey

The first column in the debug modal is the survey name. As you can see, "A general survey" is listed three times, and that is because it's distributed on three different devices. If there were translations too, the survey would be listed even more times. Once per language and device.

Device

The second column tells you which device settings this is regarding.

Trigger and container

These columns give you information about how the survey is triggered and its container.

Info

This is the column that will tell you if everything is working. The screenshot above is taken on a desktop device. If we look at the general survey, we can see that the delay (trigger time) is 4 minutes, but we have only been on the website for 2 minutes and 3 seconds. The survey is therefore not triggered yet, but it will be in another 2 minutes.

For mobile and tablet, the information is "Desktop devices excluded". That means that the distributions for these two devices will not be triggered on the desktop, which is being used in this example.

Then, if we look at the last row, which is the desktop distribution of a targeted survey, the info says "Current url doesn't match any included urls". The targeted survey is only triggered on selected pages, and the page where the debug modal is open is not one of those URLs. The survey will therefore not be triggered on this page.

If you have triggered or answered the survey before, the modal will also tell you how much time is left before the survey can be triggered again.

Modal settings

Within the debug modal, there are a few buttons.

Stop/start

This button stops or starts your session time.

Toggle

Click here to hide or show the survey rows. When hidden, you will only see the purple header.

Reset

When you select this button, you reset your session time and when the survey was last shown to you. That will allow you to test the trigger again.

Exit

This button closes the modal.
